Lee Doud , an actor-producer who is of mixed race, is used to hearing casual ethnic slurs about his Chinese heritage, even on dates. Then, something changed. Emasculating stereotypes, perpetuated in films and on TV shows , can put Asian men at a disadvantage in dating. One OkCupid study from concluded that Asian men are found less desirable than other men on the app. In a speed-dating study conducted at Columbia University, Asian men had the most difficulty getting a second date. Model and fitness coach Kevin Kreider , a Korean-American adopted by Irish-German parents, was so perturbed by his experiences on Tinder, he stopped using the app. As soon as Kreider stopped using apps and started looking for matches in real life, he began meeting women who were more his type and into him. Negativity and resentment just poisons you. This was in part because of their appearance they wore foreign silk tunics on their relatively lanky builds and partly due to the largely service-related jobs they took on after the gold rush cooks, dishwashers, laundrymen. The long-term annual growth in newlyweds marrying someone of a different race or ethnicity has led to dramatic increases in the overall number of people who are presently intermarried — including both those who recently married and those who did so years, or even decades, earlier. Overall increases in intermarriage have been fueled in part by rising intermarriage rates among black newlyweds and among white newlyweds.

Why are brown men so infatuated with white women onscreen, BuzzFeed writer Imran Sidiquee asks in his essay of the same name. Why do they overlook and underrepresent women of color in order to date white women is the question I ask. Interracial dating has been a facet of living in the diaspora for ages. I myself have a mixed family and mixed-race cousins. Many of my south Asian friends date non-south Asian people.
It happens. To hear many of my brown girlfriends tell it, dating a south Asian man comes with cultural baggage—like being tied to a patriarchal set of rules that keeps you firmly mired in specific, oppressive gender roles. Samarth, like me, has a mixed history with dating south Asian and white men. She chose to stop dating south Asian men after she realized how toxic and abusive they had been in her dating life.

Tetris and sank deep into my gut. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was sitting in bed browsing through Bumble. I had been on this supposedly.
Earlier this year, I went on a date with a man who told me he had a thing for Asian women. We were sitting across from each other at a table in a fancy restaurant and he stood up to do a head-to-toe scan of me. I am sick of being fetishised because of racist stereotypes about “small and compliant” Asian women. Credit: Stocksy. I told myself to run. Here was yet another man with what is not-so-jokingly referred to as Yellow Fever: the lazy and discriminatory hyper-sexualisation and fetishisation of Asian women, primarily by white men, solely based on race.
When I tried to break it off with him, he texted: “I hate you. Thankfully, there are thousands of gorgeous Japanese, Chinese and Korean girls in Sydney, so I will be okay. This is not unusual. I have spent most of my adult life expending psychological and emotional energy fending off men like him. I have a small body. I have an Asian face. Women like me are handcuffed to a double bind. We have to fight off men who infantilise us because of our small bodies, and who also believe the Asian face carries some special gene that makes us soft-spoken, gentle and non-confrontational.
First, some history: When I was a child, watching my pops get ready to go out was something to behold. He would spend hours preparing his mask every morning for whatever crowd, person or community he faced. Even years later, my pops still took longer to get ready than my mother and sister combined, delicately taking a black Sharpie to any stray grays that might pop up in his goatee. My pops would explain that as a young man in the Dominican Republic, you had to work so hard perfecting yourself, preparing your mask, so that when a young European or American woman came through, she might choose you, as he would put it, might take you home with her, like that was your only way out.
An Asian fetish is a strong sexual or romantic preference for persons of Asian descent, especially East or Southeast Asian descent and to some extent South.
You hate Asian men, they insist; you hate your own child. You hate yourself. I save these messages in a folder on my computer to document the abuse. Whenever I upgrade my laptop, I copy them over, little packets of poison I must keep and carry forever. It was a moment when Asian-Americans were celebrating as a community, yet here was a hate message plummeting out of the blue into my inbox.
And like most of the harassing messages I receive, it came from an Asian man. In frustration, I shared the message on Twitter, and most people were appalled. Targeted harassment from Asian-American men toward Asian-American women over choosing a non-Asian partner or having multiracial children, I discovered, is widespread, vicious, and devastating. For instance, actress Hana Wu was targeted on Twitter after she tweeted a film trailer in which her character has a relationship with a white man, and she soon began receiving misogynistic messages on Instagram.
Other times, the implied violence is more subtle.

Written by Andrew Kung. All opinions expressed in this article belong to the author. Beauty is a new section of CNN Style. I always knew that, as an Asian American man growing up in the United States, I wasn’t as desirable or “American” as my peers. As a kid, I never saw Asian men dating outside of our race, or with white women especially.
Non-Asian women felt inaccessible, fueling a preexisting feeling of invisibility — one driven by micro-aggressions, a lack of representation and, ultimately, stereotypes that painted us as passive, emasculated boys lacking sex appeal and a voice. When I think of what it means to be “all-American,” I imagine a prototypical white male — physically well-built, outgoing, charismatic, liked by everyone. This traditionally masculine person represents the ideal man reinforced by what we see on TV, in movies and across the broader mainstream.
Asian American men, however, have never fit this mold. Unlike Asian American women, who have long been fetishized in the West, we have been desexualized ever since the first Chinese communities immigrated to the US. As a way of minimizing the threat posed by Chinese men — who were often portrayed as stealing white Americans’ jobs and women — Asians were characterized as passive, effeminate and weak.
These stereotypes were further promoted in movies, where white actors like Mickey Rooney Mr.

Hegemonic masculinity generates not only external but also internal hegemony, that is, hegemony over other masculinities. Among several, two studies are of particular note: one on class-based masculinities played out as men’s interpersonal power over women in marital relationships [ 44 ], and another on gay fraternity members’ challenges to hegemonic masculinity and the reification of male dominance over women [ 55 ].
Connell [ 12 ] argues that the notion of hegemonic femininity is inappropriate.
